Shaun Bloodworth #FriendsOfShaun

Shaun Bloodworth’s years as a professional photographer have seen him take portraits of everyone from John Simpson to John Shuttleworth, plus many familiar faces from Sheffield’s creative scene. Meanwhile his interest in underground music has seen him regularly collaborate with Mary Anne Hobbs on images that have been seen around the globe. With work featuring in the National Portrait Gallery’s collections and a move into filmmaking, Shaun has had a massive impact on how Sheffield is seen both within the city and around the world. All this talent, and one of the nicest men you’ll ever meet too.

Shaun is ill. He’s been in the Northern General Hospital for almost 4 months now, waiting for a liver transplant. He’s also suffered an infection that led to him having his lower leg amputated. His transplant is now imminent, but it’s becoming critical that he receives a new liver soon.

Shaun is self-employed, so this enforced and lengthy stay in hospital is making a shitty situation even shittier. We want to create something positive for Shaun and his family at this awful time.

Friends of Shaun are holding a fundraising night at the Forum on Devonshire Street on September 1st, 7pm-2am. There’ll be dancing, laughing and boozing. Martin Simpson will play a live set, while Pete McKee, The Black Dog, Chris Smith, Pipes, Kid Acne, Oris Jay, and Pho-Ku Sound System will be spinning tunes. There’ll be raffle prizes from Warp Records, Kid Acne, The Black Dog, CPU Records and loads more. Shaun’s London pals won’t miss out either: on 15 September, Mary Anne Hobbs is curating a series of club nights with some of Shaun’s good friends from Bleep, Boiler Room, GiveUpArt and RinseFM – location details to follow.

We’re also be holding an eBay auction of fantastic stuff donated by some of Shaun’s creative chums – start bidding! And look out for news of an intimate fundraising evening with John Shuttleworth coming soon.

All money raised from the events in Sheffield and London, the raffle and auction will be donated to Shaun and his family to make this most difficult of times a little bit easier, and to show our love and support. Visit the eBay auction. Written by Claire Thornley; August 11, 2016

ICYMI, Burgundy Blood Meets Mongrels…

We (MONGRELS) ventured into the ‘Pop Wilderness’ to make this off key cassette EP with our brother from another mother, BURGUNDY BLOOD (AKA Chris De Burgundy) who’s not only a mighty fine MC, he’s also shared stages with the likes of Wu Tang, Ultramagnetics and Cypress Hill. So what we’re saying is, it’s probably worth a listen. Only a few copies left. Available HERE

ATTACK THE MONOLITH Limited Edition Vinyl Release

Back in the mid 1990’s, myself and (DJ) BENJAMIN formed a group called MONGRELS. We self-released a few records from time to time before the project lay dormant for over a decade. A few years ago, I unearthed some early demos and half-finished material, which inspired us to get back in the studio and pick things up where we’d left off.

Over the past 12 months, these endeavours have began to see the light of day in the form of:

LOW BUDGET/HIGH CONCEPTYOU DIG RAPS? (Part 1) and BURGUNDY BLOOD MEETS MONGRELS… IN THE POP WILDERNESS. The main focus however, was to create a full length album, which I’m pleased to say is finally HERE.

ATTACK THE MONOLITH is now available on limited edition vinyl, complete with hand-printed sleeves, inner sleeves and risograph insert. Each copy is numbered on the back in an edition of 250. First 50 copies = GOLD ink, 2nd 75 copies = SILVER ink, 3rd 125 copies = BRONZE ink. The inner sleeves are printed in TEAL, MINT and PINK, selected at random to keep things interesting. First come first served, no preference available in advance. Order yourself a copy HERE.

Despite being disguised as a lo-fi rap record, this is as much of an art project as the rest of my studio output. The illustration, design, print-making and imagery within the lyrics explore ongoing themes of lost civilisations, matriarch societies, ancient mythology and 80’s pop culture references a plenty. The album also features honorary MONGREL and NEW KINGDOM alumni, SEBASTIAN LAWS as well as guest appearances from UK heavyweights, LORD RAO and JUICE ALEEM. The record has been mixed and mastered by fellow Sheffielder, DEAN HONER (ECCENTRONIC RESEARCH COUNCIL) and photography comes courtesy of SHAUN BLOODWORTH.
